Periods of Wartime Service 
War Period  Date 
Mexican Border Period  May 9, 1916 through April 5, 1917 

Veterans who during such period served in Mexico, on its borders or in adjacent waters 

 
World War I  April 6, 1917 through November 11, 1918 

Veterans who served in Russia 

April 6, 1917 through April 1, 1920 

Veterans who served after Nov. 11, 1918 and before July 2, 1921, provided that such veterans had at least one day of service after April 5, 1917 and before Nov. 12, 1918 

April 6, 1917 through July 1, 1921 
World War II  Dec. 7, 1941 through Dec. 31, 1946 
Korean Conflict  June 27, 1950 through Jan. 31, 1955 
Vietnam Era  August 5, 1964 through May 7, 1975 

For veterans who served in Vietnam the period has been extended for the purposes of VA programs generally (home loans, pension and healthcare programs, etc.) 

Feb. 28, 1961 through May 7, 1975 

For veterans who served in Vietnam the period has been extended for VA benefits and healthcare eligibility based on the presumption that the veteran had been exposed to herbicides and defoliants while in the Republic of Vietnam 

Jan. 9, 1962 through May 7, 1975 
Persian Gulf  August 2, 1990 through Date to be Determined
