Position: Reading Teacher/Librarian at Helen Keller School of Alabama

Position Requirements:
  • Must hold a current Alabama State Department of Education Teaching Certificate in Special Education (Visual impairment or Hearing Impairment).
  • Must have three years experience working with visually impaired or hearing impaired students.
  • Previous experience teaching reading is desired.
  • A minimum of 80% competency in Braille according to the AIDB Braille Skills Assessment must be attained within the first twelve (12) months of employment.
  • A sign language proficiency of Survival according to the AIDB evaluation system must be obtained within the first twelve (12) months of employment. Intermediate proficiency must be obtained within the first thirty (30) months of employment.
  • Must be able to physically assist students as required.
  • The successful applicant must submit to a criminal history background information check including, but not limited to FBI and ABI record repositories. Upon offer of employment, the applicant must present a non-refundable fee of $49.65 and appear for scheduled fingerprinting appointment.
Performance Responsibilities:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of subject matter as outlined in the Alabama State Department of Education curriculum.
  • Demonstrate the ability to teach subject matter as outline in the Alabama State Department of Education curriculum.
  • Participate in development of students’ IEP based on curricular guidelines.
  • Implement student IEP’s.
  • Review and update IEP files.
  • Maintain all required records and prepare necessary reports.
  • Use existing and new student information systems.
  • Protect confidentiality of student information.
  • Accurately document behavior incidents as necessary.
  • Participate in student staffing as necessary.
  • Recommendations regarding equipment and services should be developed cooperatively with the administration.

  • Prepare lesson plans and curricular guidelines (pacing guides).
  • Prepare and display bulletin boards with educational themes
  • Assess classroom/instructional needs, prepare classroom/instructional supply and equipment orders.
  • Participate in assessing and making recommendations for supply and equipment needs.
  • Maintain attractive, clean, appropriate educational environment (orderly classroom).
  • Chaperone students on field trips
  • Maintain classroom discipline.
  • Assist in the establishment and implementation of classroom behavior management plans.
  • Become familiar with and observe rules, regulations and policies of HKS and AIDB.
  • Observe the Code of Ethics of the teaching profession.
  • Work and cooperate with staff members, support personnel and administration to provide for the welfare and best interests of the students.
  • Create, review and update the curriculum as necessary.
  • Supervise and assist in all services of the library.
  • Establish and maintain policies and procedures for preview, evaluation, selection, and use of materials.
  • Determine student, class, dormitory, and school needs pertaining to library services.
  • Organize and coordinate book fairs, contests, and special events that relate to literacy.
  • Maintain library facilities in a neat and orderly manner.
  • Supervise and assist in all services of the library.
  • Attend faculty and committee meetings.
  • Participate in training sessions and workshops provided.
  • Supervise and work cooperatively with teacher aides as requested.
  • Deal with emergency situations in a calm and logical manner.
  • Maintain adequate AIDB inventory of equipment that is properly maintained and serviceable.
  • Become familiar with and implement technology for the visually impaired and hearing impaired students in the classroom.
  • Must be willing to learn and implement new programs.
  • Follow all the policies and procedures as outlined in the AIDB Policy and Procedure Manual.
  • Demonstrate professionalism at all times (ex. dress, behavior, speech, etc.)
  • Other duties as assigned.

SALARY: $39,789 - $52,992 Scale l1 Rank 2T (BS-Rank II Certification)

SALARY: $46,639 - $60,865 Scale l1 Rank 1T (MA-Rank I Certification)

SALARY: $49,650 - $64,321 Scale l1 Rank AA (AA Certification)

This is an exempt position and is not subject to overtime or compensatory provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
