Last week, I briefly touched on my role as guide dog for BVA National President Paul Mimms. I refer to him as Dad. He affectionally calls me Boo Boo. Dad and I became partners on June 11, 2018, and we live in Kansas City, Missouri. I was trained by America’s Vet Dogs, a subsidiary of the Guide Dog Foundation in Smithtown, Long Island, New York.
I prefer to be in the same room as my dad and I tend to follow him wherever he goes. At times, I become so excited about my work that Dad claims that I pull him like a locomotive. I love to be around people, am drawn to kids, and when it comes to dogs, I have never met a stranger. I play with the occasional squeaky toy, and when it comes to bones, I am a recreational chewer.
During meetings I settle down quickly, and although I may take a snooze, I am always paying attention and ready to work. An amazing quality of mine is demonstrated in church. After recitation of the Lord’s prayer, I jump up and out into the aisle on my own to receive communion.
People tend to gather around me simply because I am there, and I like to think that all parties and parades are in my honor. I am very gentle and honored to serve my dad.
