Colorectal cancer is one of the most diagnosed cancers among veterans, and early detection can save lives. As part of its commitment to supporting veterans’ health, VA’s Veterans Health Administration hopes that every veteran knows about VA’s mailed FIT (Fecal Immunochemical Test) Program—a convenient way to get screened without needing to visit a VA facility.
Each month, more than 25,000 eligible veterans receive a FIT in the mail. It’s a simple, at-home screening process that can help detect early signs of colorectal cancer. By the end of 2025, at least 80 percent of VA facilities will be implementing mailed FIT, expanding access to this life-saving screening option. If the FIT is positive, a follow-up colonoscopy will be needed.
If you are a veteran between the ages of 45 and 75 who is not already up to date with colorectal cancer screening, VA recommends getting screened with a FIT kit every year. Veterans with a history of colorectal cancer, or with any concerning symptoms, should talk with their VA provider. If you receive a FIT kit in the mail, try to complete the test as soon as possible.
