Today, we celebrate Halloween. This will unleash costumes, candy, and lots of celebrations. While hounds love Halloween, the tradition can bring hazards to our four-legged friends. The following constitute five safety tips and “tails” to keep all our furry friends safe while still “pawtaking” in the fun:

  1. Costumes should be safe, comfortable, and never cover a working vest or harness.
  2. Keep candy and toxic foods like chocolate and xylitol far from our reach.
  3. Doorbells, visitors, and noise can cause stress to dogs — plan calm spaces and breaks.
  4. Use reflective collars, leashes, or LED gear for nighttime visibility.
  5. Watch for stress signals and educate humans about guide dog etiquette.

Halloween doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With a little foresight, you can enjoy the festivities while making sure that guide and service dogs like me stay safe, calm, and by your side. Click the button below to learn more.
