VA has announced that a rule will soon be proposed within the Department that would extend eligibility for the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC) through September 30, 2028, to certain veterans and their family caregivers. PCAFC is part of VA’s broader Caregiver Support Program. It offers enhanced clinical support for family caregivers of eligible veterans who incurred or aggravated a serious injury in the line of duty and who meet other eligibility criteria.

The new rule will extend program eligibility for legacy participants, legacy applicants, and their family caregivers for three years while VA continues the rulemaking process to refine the program. The extension will ensure that legacy participants and applicants can maintain their benefits and stability during that period.

Legacy participants are veterans, service members, and their family caregivers who were PCAFC participants as of September 30, 2020. Legacy applicants are veterans, service members, and their family caregivers who applied for PCAFC on or after October 1, 2020.
