BVA is excited to share an innovative new service from Uber that aims to enhance accessibility for individuals with visual impairments: the Uber Call to Ride option. This initiative is designed to provide a more straightforward and user-friendly way for blind and low vision veterans to access rides without the need to navigate the Uber mobile application.

What is the Call to Ride Option?

Uber’s Call to Ride option allows users to request a ride by simply calling a dedicated phone number. This service is particularly beneficial for those who may find it challenging to use the Uber app due to visual impairments or other accessibility issues. By providing an alternative method to book rides, Uber is making transportation more inclusive and accessible for everyone.

How Does the Call to Ride Option Work?

Using the Call to Ride option is simple and straightforward, and there is no extra charge:

  1. Call the Dedicated Number: Users can call 1-833-USE-UBER (1-833-873-8237) to initiate a ride request. This eliminates the need to navigate the app, making it easier for those who may have difficulty with small screens or touch interfaces. Hours are limited to 4:00am to 10:00pm Eastern Time. The service is available in the United States anywhere Uber operates. Users must make calls with a phone that accepts text messages.
  2. Provide the Location and Destination: Once connected, the user will be prompted to provide their pickup location. This can be done by stating the address or describing a nearby landmark, making it easier for those who may not be familiar with their surroundings.
  3. Confirm the Ride: After providing the necessary information, the user will receive confirmation of their ride, including details about the driver and vehicle via a text message.
  4. Enjoy the Ride: Once the ride arrives, users can simply get in and enjoy their journey, knowing that they have a reliable transportation option at their fingertips.
Why is Call to Ride Important for Veterans?

For many veterans, especially those with visual impairments, transportation can be a significant barrier to independence. The Call to Ride option addresses this challenge by providing a more accessible way to request rides.
