BVA recognizes both National Disability Employment Awareness Month and Blindness Awareness Month throughout October.
National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) raises awareness about disability employment and honors the contributions of workers with disabilities. It also advocates for greater opportunities for gainful employment of all Americans with disabilities. The annual October designation, which started as a weeklong recognition in 1945 and was expanded to a full month in 1988, aims to promote disability inclusion in the workforce. The theme for NDEAM 2025 is “Celebrating Value and Talent.” The U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy leads the campaign, and many organizations, including BVA, participate in the annual observance.
Blindness Awareness Month raises awareness about blindness and visual impairment, highlights the realities of living without sight, and promotes prevention and support for the blind and visually impaired community. Activities include advocating for better access to eye care, educating the public about eye health, celebrating the achievements of people with vision loss, and sharing information about traveling and navigating with the help of the white cane.
