I hope that the holiday season has been a most enjoyable and pleasant one for our BVA members and their families. This same hope extends to our many friends, supporters, and other readers of BVA Happenings. On behalf of our entire National Headquarters staff, I wish you a happy and prosperous 2025.
Although we live in trying times, there is much to look forward to in 2025 as we serve one another in our individual BVA areas of responsibility. We will not give up our quest to continue locating and improving the quality of life for each and every blind and low vision veteran.
If you have not already made a firm decision about attending our milestone 80th National Convention in Dallas, Texas, July 5-11, today or next week would be an ideal time to make that decision! Doing so will likely offer the most economical and flexile flight arrangements. Although lodging rates at the Hyatt Regency Dallas will not fluctuate, it will still pay off to book your stay early in order to secure that reservation.
After serving more than five years as National Executive Director, I have made the decision to retire in the first quarter of 2025, once a successor is selected and our annual audit completed.
When I was asked to take the helm at BVA, my wife, Peggy, and I talked about the job being a three-to-five-year commitment. It is now time to take the next step in my career journey, exploring new challenges and opportunities. Serving alongside each of you has been one of my greatest honors and privileges, and I continue to be inspired by each of you.
One of the Board of Directors’ most important responsibilities is to make certain that appropriate leadership is in place. Early on, I promised I would give them ample notice and plenty of time to select our next National Executive Director. I will stay on to ensure a smooth transition.
I joined BVA as a member after being blinded during combat operations in Iraq during Operation Desert Storm and have remained committed to our mission for the last 33 years. I am grateful for the trust you place in BVA and the confidence in me that you have demonstrated. This Association will maintain the high standard of service our members deserve, and we will continue working hard every day to earn and renew your trust.
