Upon reflecting on BVA’s rich history, one is reminded of the organization’s unwavering commitment to supporting blinded veterans and their families. Founded by war-blinded veterans returning from World War II, BVA has served as a beacon of hope and advocacy for more than 80 years. The Association continues its efforts to build on that legacy by empowering the membership to make a difference in their communities.
“Consistent with our mission and recent focus, we are thrilled to announce the launch of a virtual BVA Ambassador training class, set to begin on September 16,” said National Outreach Director Teresa Galgano. “This next program will run for the first three Tuesdays of each month until February 24, 2026, with classes scheduled from 2:00 to 3:30pm Eastern Time via Zoom.”
What Is a BVA Ambassador and What Is the Requisite Training to Become One?
A BVA Ambassador is a dedicated individual who has successfully graduated from the training class and serves as an outreach representative for other blinded veterans. The course will cover essential information about the various VA benefits and resources available to blind and low vision veterans.
While Ambassadors will not be trained to be Veteran National Service Officers, they will gain valuable knowledge on where to direct fellow veterans for assistance.
Ambassadors can choose to volunteer at their local clinics through the VA Center for Development and Civic Engagement or provide support remotely via telephone. This role is not only rewarding but also vital in fostering a sense of community among blinded veterans.
Who Should Apply?
While not everyone may feel suited to be an Ambassador, the training offers a fantastic opportunity to learn more about BVA, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and accessibility resources. Ideally, applicants should possess at least limited computer skills, including the ability to log onto Zoom calls, send and receive emails, and, if necessary, use a screen reader.
If you have already applied to attend the course, you should have received an email message this week that announced the new start date. If you are interested in becoming a BVA Ambassador, please apply here.
Join Us in Making a Difference!
Becoming a BVA Ambassador is more than just a title. It is a chance to make a meaningful impact on the lives of fellow veterans. By sharing knowledge and experiences, veterans can help others navigate the challenges of vision loss and connect them with the resources they need. Together, we can continue to uphold the BVA mission and ensure that no blinded veteran feels alone.
