Director of District 1 John O’Connell was honored as a “Hometown Hero” during a break in the action at the November 10 New Jersey Devils-New York Islanders National Hockey League game. The recognition highlighted his distinguished military service, his advocacy for blinded veterans, and his unwavering commitment to the veteran community.

Before a packed arena at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, John was introduced on the Jumbotron at Center Ice with 9:43 remaining in the second period. Fans rose to their feet with applause. The tribute spotlighted most particularly John’s service as a U.S. Air Force veteran and his leadership within BVA, where he has worked tirelessly for several years to support blinded veterans everywhere and especially within the regions that comprise District 1.

John O’Connell has long been known for his dedication to ensuring that blinded veterans receive the support, resources, and community they deserve. His work coordinating regional activities, welcoming new members, and advocating for accessible services have made him a respected and beloved figure within the BVA community.

The designation of John as a Devils “Hometown Hero” recognizes both his military service and his continuing mission to uplift fellow veterans. His recognition serves as not only a personal honor but as an exclamation mark on the achievements and needs of blinded veterans nationwide. It can also serve as an inspiration to blinded veterans everywhere. His leadership, humility, and steadfast commitment are reminders that service to others continues long after military duty ends.
