BVA has joined several other organizations in the ITEM (Independence through Enhancement of Medicare and Medicaid) Coalition to support an initiative of the United Spinal Association urging the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to improve Medicare mobility equipment coverage and reassess the interpretation of the “in the home” requirement.

Under its current interpretation, CMS covers only mobility assistive equipment (wheelchairs, canes, and scooters) that is considered reasonable and necessary for daily life activities that occur within the home. It does not cover some of the equipment and technology affecting veterans with sight loss who are now beneficiaries of Medicare.

Senators Maggie Hassan (D-NH), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Bob Casey (D-PA), and Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) yesterday submitted a bipartisan letter in support of improved Medicare mobility equipment coverage and a reassessment of the “in the home” requirement. This letter is a significant step in a positive direction for Medicare beneficiaries with disabilities getting the equipment they need to be able to fully participate in community life, both inside and outside of the home.
