Eugene Baltes, left, enjoyed reminiscing with Anthony Woodson at 110th birthday celebration.

Blinded World War II veteran Eugene (Gene) J. Baltes, a member of the Illinois Regional Group, died this past weekend (December 28-29) at his home in River Forest, Illinois. At age 110, Gene had been the oldest living male on record residing in the United States since last June. BVA offers deepest condolences to Gene’s wife, Zenaida (Zenny), and his entire family.

Gene’s vibrant personality as well as his age had recently endeared himself to the staff and volunteers at the Hines VA Hospital.

“We are heartbroken to learn of Eugene Baltes’ passing at his home this past weekend,” a social media message from Hines posted earlier this week. “Eugene was the oldest known living World War II American veteran, a cherished patient at Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital, and we honor Eugene’s remarkable 110 years of life and his proud naval service.”

Regional Group President Anthony Woodson also took a special interest in Gene and his care, sitting alongside him during his 110th birthday party on October 22. More than 100 family members and friends attended the event, including Hines Hospital Director James Doelling, who presented him with a letter of congratulations from Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary Denis McDonough. He also received a card and several mementos from BVA and a special proclamation from John Bevcar, Supervisor of River Forest Township.

“At the party we recognized his remarkable age but also his service, dedication, and the many sacrifices he made back in the day as a Navy Chief Petty Officer,” Anthony said. “The celebration was filled with joy, laughter, and heartfelt tributes by those who love him.”

Gene was born in the same River Forest Township in Illinois on October 29, 1914. He enlisted in the Navy in November 1941 and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
