The VA Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) Office of Financial Management (OFM) collaborates and serves as a partner with VBA Lines of Business to identify fraud, waste, and abuse within programs and to develop and implement solutions. Of greatest concern to OFM are scam tactics targeting veterans.

The tactics include those that create fake identities impersonating government officials, phishing attacks (fake emails, text messages, post cards), payment requests via nontraditional means, and building trust through social media interactions.

OFM urges veterans to never share banking information, to verify the identity of anyone asking for personal information, and to refrain from clicking on unknown or suspicious messages. Other advice includes using trusted payment methods, being wary of social media requests, and maximizing privacy settings for all social media accounts.

Several VBA resources provide information on common scams impacting veterans and preventative measures to avoid fraud.
