Immersive Technology is any technology that extends reality or creates a new reality by leveraging the 360-degree space. Because Immersive Technology leverages that sphere, users can look in any direction and see content. VA is embracing Immersive Technology as it transforms how veterans experience care and offers innovative tools that improve access, engagement, and health outcomes.

Some types of Immersive Technology extend reality by overlaying digital images on a user’s environment. Others create a new reality by completely shutting a user out from the rest of the world and immersing them in a digital environment.

Immersive Technology has four components: Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), Mixed Reality (MR), and Spatial Computing (SC). Extended Reality (XR) is often used as an umbrella term to refer to VR, AR, and MR.

With more than 40 use cases across VA, immersive technology is already improving health outcomes and veteran experiences in the areas of Physical Rehabilitation, Mental Health Support, and Pain Management.

Immersive technology (like Virtual Reality (VR) is not intended to replace treatment with a provider. Additionally, immersive technology is not meant to be used as a standalone treatment for any condition, but can and should be used to supplement or support self-care. For examples of the more than 40 active use cases, use the drop-down below.
