February is recognized and observed annually as Black History Month. Throughout the month, the National Veterans Memorial and Museum in Columbus, Ohio, is sharing the experiences, challenges and triumphs of Black American veterans by telling their stories. The memorial and museum honor these veterans for their courage, sacrifice, and perseverance, and thanks them for preserving American freedoms. African American veterans fought our country’s wars even when they had to battle for the right to do so.
Originating in the United States, Black History Month is also known as African American History Month. The recognition of Black history began as a way of remembering the worldwide community descended from the people of Africa, predominantly in the Americas. The celebration of Black history started out as a weeklong observation but in 1970 became a month-long commemoration during February.
Black History Month has received official recognition from governments in the United States and Canada. More recently, it has been celebrated in Ireland and the United Kingdom, where it is observed in October.
