BVA members, perhaps most especially those blessed to have a guide dog in their life, would probably agree that the heroes of today include a group that comes with four legs. National K9 Veterans Day, March 13, is a day set aside to honor and commemorate the sacrifices, dedication, and invaluable service of American K9 units since World War II. From battlefields to search and rescue operations, assistance to law enforcement, and service as therapy companions, these unique military working dogs are a vital part of today’s fighting force. Prepare to salute them next Thursday!
It was March 13, 1942, when the Army began training for its new War Dog Program, also known as the “K9 Corps,” according to American Humane, marking the first time that dogs were officially a part of the U.S. Armed Forces. Whether our BVA Happenings readers are dog lovers, veterans, or those who simply respect the profound contributions of these canine companions, the following offer ways to participate in K9 Veterans Day activities this year and long beyond.
- Attend a Memorial: Many cities host memorial events or services dedicated to fallen heroes.
- Support K9 Units: Consider donating to organizations that support the military and police units with K9s.
- Educate Others: Share information about the incredible roles and achievements of service dogs.
- Adopt a Retired Service Dog: Many service dogs seek loving homes, post-retirement. This could be an opportunity to give back directly.
Today’s military dogs are valued as important members of their military units and even have their own retirement ceremonies, awards, medals, and memorial services. A four-minute U.S. Army video entitled Day in the Life: Military Working Dog Handler demonstrates the training and miraculous heroism of the K9s.
