This Sunday, November 10, United States Marines around the globe will celebrate an astonishing 249 years of training and combat success, reaffirming their commitment to the Corps’ proud legacy of honor, courage, and commitment. The Marine Corps’ annual tradition celebrates the establishment of the organization on November 10, 1775, by the Second Continental Congress.

The Continental Congress ordered that two battalions of Marines be raised for service as landing forces with the fleet. Marines have participated in all wars of the United States, being in most instances first, or among the first, to fight. In addition, Marines have executed more than 300 landings on foreign shores and served in every major U.S. naval action since 1775.

The Marine Corps birthday is a cherished tradition observed worldwide by U.S. Marines past and present. The annual event in various locales features special exhibits, parades, drill team performances, and inspirational remarks by top leaders. The event is typically highlighted by a birthday ball and ceremonial cake cutting. On Sunday, for example, the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, Virginia, will host a free and open-to-the-public traditional cake-cutting ceremony at 10:00am and 2:00pm.

Current Marine Corp Commandant Eric M. Smith has shared a birthday message with all Marines, addressing their valor and referring to them as the Nation’s sentinels of freedom. Read Commandant Smith’s message and view the traditional birthday message video he has crafted specifically for 2024.
