Some 25 members of BVA’s Greater Houston Regional Group (GHRG) participated in the City of Houston’s White Cane Day celebration on October 15. The annual event, which brings hundreds of blind and visually impaired people into downtown Houston, is hosted by the Houston Council on White Cane Safety Day. The day’s activities seek to make the world more aware of the resilience of those who are blind or visually impaired.

“In Houston and across the nation, we come together during the month of October to recognize the critical role that the white cane and service animal play in empowering the blind and low vision community,” said Angel Ponce, Director of the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities.

This year’s event kicked off with a mayoral proclamation presented by Ponce and speakers from city management and special guests. Live artistic performances that celebrate the accomplishments and independence of individuals with sight loss, door prizes, an awareness march, a resource fair with display tables, and lunch all followed.

“GHRG is very proud to be a part of Houston’s White Cane Safety Day,” reported Wade Davis, BVA’s current National Vice President and a longtime member and leader within the regional group.
