Anyone familiar with Heartland Regional Group President Jeanie Murphy would not be surprised to learn that her Saturdays are rarely spent doing things for herself. More than likely, she is helping someone else or doing work for BVA. This past October 19 was no exception as she participated in the Fort Riley, Kansas Retirement Fair for the third time.

“The retirement fair has always presented a great opportunity for us to promote BVA as well as the Heartland Regional Group,” Jeanie said. “The Post Commander comes in and welcomes everyone, which is followed by breakout sessions that present excellent information.”

Located about 20 minutes from her home in Manhattan, Fort Riley is where Jeanie and her husband, Robert, both retired.

A total of 47 organizations or vendors participated in the fair this year. In addition to the standard BVA informational items that can be used at display tables, Jeanie also brought with her a sampling of the technology and other tools she uses every day to enhance her quality of life.

“I display and explain the Patriot Viewer, the OrCam Read, and magnifiers to show how low vision veterans can continue to live independently, also explaining how those with sight loss can receive helpful devices from VA Blind Rehabilitation Service at their respective VA facility.”

Like many fellow BVA members, Jeanie enjoys participating in events such as the Fort Riley fair, and she does so with an extra dose of enthusiasm.

“What I like about involving myself in these events is that they give me, a visually impaired/blinded veteran, an opportunity to show and tell others how BVA has enhanced my life and how the organization is a true advocate for our community of veterans.”
