VA Lowers Burden of Proof to Receive Care and Benefits for Cancers
VA this week announced that acute and chronic leukemias, multiple myelomas, myelodysplastic syndromes, myelofibrosis, urinary bladder cancer, ureter cancer, and related genitourinary cancers will now be presumptive for service connection for both Gulf War and Post-9/11 veterans who served in nations of the Middle East.
The move means that veterans from the two conflicts will no longer be obligated to prove that their service caused their condition in order to receive the appropriate care and benefits. Instead, VA will automatically presume service connection for the condition and provide benefits accordingly. Presumptions for some conditions took effect January 2, 2025, while all others become effective today, January 10.
