BVA Dog Handler Committee Chair Michaun Harrison has announced a special guest speaker for the monthly meeting this Tuesday, February 21, at 4:00pm. Dr. Devon Smith, veterinarian at Southeastern Guide Dogs, Inc., in Palmetto, Florida, will address the virtual participants via Zoom.
Dr. Smith has been a passionate animal lover since her early childhood. Between horseback riding and growing up in a home filled with rescue dogs, she was always surrounded by animals. During her junior year of college at the University of Delaware, Dr. Smith changed her major to animal science with a focus on pre-veterinary medicine and never looked back. She graduated from veterinary school in May of 2014 and practiced in New York City for three years before returning to her hometown of Towson, Maryland, where she practiced small animal medicine and surgery. She joined Southeastern Guide Dogs in March of last year.
Veterans who do not currently have a working guide dog, or who have never had one, are still welcome to attend all Dog Handler Committee meetings. The discussion is also not limited to a specific group of dog handlers already established nor is attendance at previous meetings a requirement to attend on February 21. All are invited and welcome to join the informal session and participate.
