Millions of Americans still recall 22 years later where they were and how they felt as the tragic and horrifying events of September 11, 2001, unfolded. Many of our newer BVA members enlisted or were called up thereafter to participate in ensuing conflicts that followed 9/11.

In solemn commemoration of the anniversary, now known in many circles as Patriot Day, the following constitute meaningful ways to demonstrate respect and honor those who gave their lives, both on that day and later.

  • Observe the day with a moment of silence beginning at 8:46am Eastern Time.
  • Observe the day with ceremonies and activities, including remembrance services.
  • Flags should be displayed at half-staff in honor of the individuals who lost their lives from sunrise to sundown.
  • Patriot Day has been added to the Flag Holidays listed in section 174 of the US Flag Code. Fly the flag outside your home or office.
  • State and local governments and the people of the United States are asked to observe Patriot Day with appropriate programs and activities.
