September is National Service Dog Month. Created in 2008, the idea for this appreciation month came from actor Dick Van Patten, who was impressed by the great help he had observed service dogs perform to humans with certain ailments and disabilities. To further the cause, he also launched a fundraising initiative to benefit the animals who worked hard every day in service dog training schools.

Van Patten also became an honorary board member of the Guide Dogs of the Desert. This led to a chain reaction and, gradually, fundraising efforts during National Service Dog Month were conducted across the country.

BVA continues to honor the critical roles performed by guide dogs and the professionals who train them. The BVA 78th National Convention’s unprecedented Bow Wow Lounge was an effort to honor, recognize, and reward these faithful friends and guides slightly before the month set aside to recognize them nationally. Thanks once again to Waymo and PetSmart of the St. Louis District for sponsoring this unique component of the convention week.
