BVA Director of Member Relations Teresa Galgano offers her assessment of a modern, nontraditional means of traversing a ski slope.

Have you ever wanted to experience the thrill of skiing but felt intimidated by the traditional method? Or are you perhaps looking for a new challenge on the slopes? If so, then skibiking might be just the thing for you!

Skibikes are essentially bicycles with two small skis instead of wheels. They offer a unique and exciting way to experience the winter wonderland, combining the exhilaration of skiing with the comfort and familiarity of cycling.

And the best part? Skibikes are perfect for people of all abilities, including those with disabilities. Unlike traditional skiing, which requires balancing on two skis, skibikes provide a more stable platform that is easier to control. This makes them an excellent option for beginners, people with mobility impairments, and anyone who wants a more relaxed skiing experience.

Last week, I tried my first skibike in Steamboat Adaptive Sports (STARS) in Steamboat Springs, CO. My instructor, Mark Struss, pictured here with me and the bikes on the ski slopes, made sure I was prepared to ski. I didn’t fall once in three days on the slopes, and it felt like I was riding a mountain bike. It was more maneuverable than regular skis. The instructors always go at your pace and ability.

So, what are you waiting for? Give skibiking a try and discover a whole new way to enjoy winter!
