BVA National Headquarters learned this week of a holiday-related endeavor of the Carolina Regional Group, motivated by the discovery of a truly genuine opportunity to serve two of their fellow blinded veterans. Yoneka Trent provided an account of the effort to Director of Member Relations Teresa Galgano, who relates the following with fictional names and places for the sake of confidentiality and the sensitive nature of the issues involved.

A VIST coordinator forwarded an email to Yoneka from a compassionate blinded veteran named John, who expressed concern for another blinded veteran, James, residing in the same nursing home. James, an Air Force Vietnam veteran like John, had become disheartened, spending his days confined to bed without any entertainment. Feeling a sense of duty, John reached out, unwilling to leave a fellow comrade behind.

Upon investigation by officers in the new Fayetteville chapter, it was discovered that James’ despondency was due in large part to the lack of warm clothing. He endured the cold in his bed, clad only in a hospital gown, without pajamas or slippers. Recognizing the dire situation, the chapter delved further into the living conditions of both veterans, revealing a pattern of stolen belongings and a distressing absence of advocates.

Prompted by this revelation, the chapter initiated a heartwarming Christmas project, adopting John and James as recipients. Pledging support, they committed to providing essential items such as pajamas, slippers, bathrobes, hats, and other necessities for the veterans during the holiday season. Moreover, the chapter vowed to make weekly visits to ensure that John and James experience an improved quality of life.

As part of this initiative, John is set to receive a five-pound bag of birdseed for the birdfeeder outside his window, allowing him to reconnect with the simple joy of listening to birds. The chapter, taking a proactive stance, filed complaints with the nursing home on behalf of the veterans. Additionally, a secure locker will be provided to safeguard their valuables, addressing the issue of stolen belongings, and aiming to restore a sense of security to their lives at the home.
